Best learning is from Dr Becky - Good Inside - because we are all simply bigger kids (my words and not her)
The space between knowing and not knowing is very uncomfortable. The learning space has one feeling - frustration. Then frustration means you are learning. Resilience and success comes from the length of time you can tolerate in the learning space.
Look at right hand - this is who you are; Look at your left hand - this is what you do.
If you put them together every time someone comments on what you do - then you tend to interpret feedback as an attach on self.
Hold your hands apart and the space is curiosity which allows learning and growth.
Long term retention versus short term retention - ask students for a diagnosis rather than "what did you find out". Even if they are wrong their retention will be better.
Get students in a group to all write down the answer to any question. Otherwise there is no learning - people just think - yes I knew that.
Don't use WHY. Try a sentence with "what" or "Are you against doing this?"
This is because WHY is a trigger word. We are conditioned in childhood to hear "why" as an accusation and not as a genunine expression of curiosity. e.g. why did you hit your brother! (From a Good inside podcast - With Chris Voss -ex FBI hostage negotiator)
Are you against doing this? asks people to express their reason for what they are doing. Gives you an opportunity to collaborate.
Feeling heard and being heard are not the same things.
Validation - 1. Describe the physical things you are seeing in a person that shows their feeling; 2. Say "if I was a male, aged 40 years and such and such happened then I imagine I would feel this as well; 3. Then you can, in a less expressive manner, agree or disagree with what they are saying.
Elephant and the rider. The Elephant is the emotions and the rider is knowledge. You need to get the Elephant going in the right direction first - validate; break down tasks to smaller items.
Autonomy is more important to people than survival. Autonomy is important to show I am real and Agency is "am I real so I can affect my live". People dont like saying Yes because as kids a "no" makes us feel protected.
Dont compare students or staff. People are competing for attention.
Change the vowel "I've got to do this" to " I get to do this".
Ask people to talk about a value that is important to them before discussing any large change they need to make. The value doesnt have to relate to the change.
Ambivalence - some people have more difficulty coping with being in ambivalance than others. Acknowledge their emotional state first before discussing the ambivalence. (William Miller book)
Triggers and self-regulation - look at your own triggers first!
This is a skill - not something that is intuitive!
To make people pay attention add a statistic into your statement - it helps the brain focus when there is a defined figure.
Anxiety = Lack of confidence in your ability to cope + uncertainty in the future. We tend to address the uncertainty but more information can make that anxiety worse rather than better.
Predictive processing theory - neuroscience theory.
We know that the brain make a guess and works before the sensory input. So demonstrator is not faster at processing the information. They already have an idea of the world and then use the sensory input to justify the decision - unless the sensory input sets up an error making the brain reassess its ideas.
We complain about hallucinating AI but we also pick the most likely outcome first and will stick with this unless our predictive error system is engaged. So for other people if they dont take on new knowledge then the block is emotional and values rather than knowledge.
